Landscape Maintenance
Where Design Meets Detail
Landscape beds are where your property’s design lives. The flowers, the mulch, the edges, the seasonal color. It’s what transforms a property from basic and maintained to beautiful and welcoming.
But there’s more to landscape beds than some mulch and some plants. There’s seasonal color and edging. Mulch and pruning. And at what times of the year do you do all of these things so that your beds look the best?
And how much will you invest to ensure your landscape beds look the best?
If you’re looking for a company that can help you give your landscape beds an upgrade, this guide is for you. We’ll walk through how Willis Commercial Landscaping approaches landscaping services, from initial planning stages to the regular maintenance on your property.
Starting with Your Goals: Economics vs. Aesthetics
Before we talk about design or schedules, we need to understand what you’re trying to achieve with your landscaping. Just like with mowing and turf, landscape maintenance is a spectrum.

On one end would be the most economical approach: getting the job done efficiently with the types of plants and schedule that cost the least. On the other end, the most aesthetic approach: using seasonal color installations, premium mulch, and a level of care that creates the absolute best appearance.
We’ll work with you to understand your priorities, your budget, and what level of landscape investment makes sense. Then we design a program that delivers on that commitment.

Landscape Detailing
This is the signature Willis service. For landscaping, we run a specialized crew whose only job is landscape detail work. This team focused entirely on bed care, edging, plant trimming, and seasonal refreshes.
They will handle pulling weeds by hand, trimming shrubs for shape and health, fluffing mulch so it looks fresh and defined. They will also handle minor tree trimming and minor vegetation management, like spraying grass creeping into sidewalk cracks. They’ll even take care of trash cleanup in the beds.
Service frequency ranges from monthly during growing season only (most economical) to weekly white glove service (most aesthetic). Monthly service keeps things functional, while weekly service keeps everything pristine.
Annual Cutbacks
Certain plants need to be cut back once a year before spring such as crape myrtles, ornamental grasses, roses, and hydrangeas. This happens in late winter and is essential for plant health and spring regrowth. It’s not optional if you want these plants to thrive and look great.
Bed Edge Refinement
Landscape bed edges where grass meets mulch can overgrow over time. Once a year, we redefine them, cutting crisp, clean lines that make the entire bed look sharper and more intentional.
Landscape Fertilization and Pre-Emergent
In spring and fall, we fertilize landscape plants to support growth and health. We also apply pre-emergent herbicide, which stops weeds from germinating in the beds before they even become a problem and won’t harm the plants you want to keep.

Flowers: Where We Shine
Flowers are what transform a landscape from functional to beautiful. We love planting flowers. And we’re good at them!
Our approach to flowers is highly detailed. To ensure flowers explode with growth and color, we create a nutrient rich environment in your landscape beds. We rotor till, add compost, peat moss, and fertilizer to all beds. We can also handle potted features that add dimension and interest to entries and gathering spaces.
Spring flowers (April through May) run through October, giving you seasonal color for six months. Common spring varieties include Angelonia, Penta, Begonias, Joseph’s Coat, Purple Heart, and Lantana. We can work with many more—there are 25+ options depending on your aesthetic and growing conditions.
Fall flowers (October through November) run through April, keeping color going through winter and spring. Fall flowers feature Violas and Pansies, with optional tulips planted underneath for extra spring impact.
Tulips are our specialty! If you’d like your property to capture attention, we will plant tulips during fall planting, typically underneath violas or pansies. They will bloom before pulling the fall flowers, creating stunning layers in your beds.
Mulch
Mulch serves multiple purposes: it suppresses weeds, regulates soil temperature, retains moisture, and defines beds visually. But not all mulch is created equal.
We prefer premium grade A shredded cedar mulch. It has natural color (no dye), doesn’t blow away easily, doesn’t wash away like pine bark, and the fibers mat together so it stays in place. Plus, when you fluff it, it looks almost brand new—which means even if it fades over two months, a quick fluff refreshes the entire bed.
We apply mulch in spring and/or fall depending on your service level. Once a year works if you’re budget-conscious; twice a year keeps everything looking consistently fresh.
We also strategize with your budget. If you have a large mulch area that’s hidden from view, we might use more economical bulk mulch there and reserve the premium cedar for the visible, high-impact areas. We get the best visual results for your dollar.
